You don’t take a photograph, you make it

Commercial photography is quite often very different to shooting events or portraits. The environment is generally more controlled and and the shots more thought out. Capturing spontaneity is fun, but it’s nice to plan shots in a more creative and thought out way sometimes too. This extra attention to detail means shoots can be technically more challenging for the commercial product / brand photographer. This is part of the reason I still love to shoot commercial work – enjoying the extra attention to detail in the planning and execution of the job.

Shooting product photography definitely satisfies my inner nerd. I love the technical challenge of creating well defined accurate images. Then there is also the creative side to making any object look magnificent! Creating context, finding the best angle, the best lighting etc… They are all challenges that get my juices flowing!

Brand

I love exploring the creative side of representing a brand. Creating an image that triggers an emotive response from the audience. A photo that connects to the vision of what the brand wants to represent. Often, it can be simply capturing the story of the people involved. What they do. Why they do it. The brand photographer creates a market context. Or a provenance for the products under the brand. The photos should convey the right context for the product, relevant to the final delivery medium too.

Headshots

A profile picture is something that all of us need these days. If you are self employed and have any sort of presence on the web, your potential customers are going to want to see who they are dealing with. If you are a small or medium sized business, then why not represent your team on the website as best as you can. Good profile pictures or headshots are a great investment for your company, business or career.

I take headshots for individuals at my studio. For businesses (5 or more team members) I will generally shoot at the business location to minimise disruption to the running of the business.

Real Estate

On the Sunshine Coast, Airbnb has become a popular option for people looking to rent out their holiday home. So no surprises, occasionally, I get asked to do airbnb photography. I do like taking photos of houses. It’s a more technical discipline, and I only have to deal with me which is kind of simpler! It’s not that different from portrait photography really, except you do use different lenses. It is still about trying to represent character with the images.
